2011 Gorilla Backpack

Periodically we repost excellent online articles reviewing our gear.  This past fall, Philip Werner at Section Hiker posted an in depth article on the Gorilla.  He discussed the pack in depth and covered the design goals, how it compares with the Mariposa™ Plus, and how to best outfit it.  You can see all the details at his post entitled “Gossamer Gear Gorilla Backpack“.

Great review. But, I am looking for a lighter pack than my Granite Gear Vapor Trail. I’m considering the Mariposa™ Plus or Gorilla. I’m hesitant to purchase one due to the lack of shoulder stabilizer straps. How well does the Gorilla or Mariposa™ Plus really carry without those? I’ve tried loosening those straps on my Vapor Trail built I don’t like the way the pack sits lower down on me and pulls on my shoulders…even with a total weight of 15 lbs.

Both the Mariposa™ Plus and Gorilla are lighter than your Granite Gear Vapor Trail but neither have shoulder stabilizer straps in them. We have found that our packs carry really well without them so we eliminated because of the additional weight. It is not just the weight of the straps but the weight of the reinforcement that is needed so that they operate properly. We have found that the Gorilla rides a bit better than the Mariposa™ Plus because of it’s slimmer design. You might try it. We will happily refund your money if you don’t like it.
