Arizona: Women’s-Only Backpack on the Arizona Trail (5/12-14)

Join Trail Ambassador Sirena Dufault on a  women’s-only backpacking trip on the Arizona National Scenic Trail.

This women’s-only backpacking trip takes us from Mormon Lake Lodge through beautiful ponderosa pine forests along Mormon Lake. We’ll cross over Lake Mary Road and go up onto Anderson Mesa past Marshall Lake and down into the colorful sandstone of Walnut Canyon.

Difficulty level:

Moderate- 31.2 miles/2,000 ft. elevation gain

Suggested Gear:

Please come prepared with with everything that you will need to backpack this passage.  You must provide your own equipment and food.

  1. Three liters of water plus an additional two liter carrying capacity.

  2. Snacks for the day.

  3. Headlamp/ Flashlight

  4. Camera.

  5. Sunscreen.

  6. Hat.

  7. Sunglasses.

  8. Comfortable hiking attire.

  9. Water purification.

  10. Sleeping bag, Sleeping pad, and a tent or tarp.

  11. Warm clothes for the night.

  12. A camping stove, or dinner that does not need to be cooked, such as a sandwich.

  13. Breakfast.

  14. Toiletries.

  15. A positive attitude.

On the day of this hike, a shuttle will be available at the Sandy’s Canyon Trailhead at Highway 3. It will depart Sandy’s Canyon for the hike’s starting point (Mormon Lake lodge) promptly at 8:00 AM.

Directions to Starting Point (Mormon Lake):  From Flagstaff, take Lake Mary rd. FH 3 about twenty one miles east to the Mormon Lake Village sign. Turn right and travel about sevem miles to the Mormon Lake Village lodge.

Directions to Ending Point (Sandy’s Canyon):Located at the far north end of the Canyon Vista Campground southeast of Flagstaff, Arizona.  From the Lake Mary road exit off I-17 head east six miles.  The Campground will be on the north side of the road.
