Our Target Market

traditional backpacking On our recent trip to Yosemite, we ran into this gang of likely characters.  They were out in this field getting ready to go packs up.  Several were playing frisbee and they were in a cool spot so we started to chat.  One thing led to another and they started asking us about our packs.  Of course we told them all about them and the cool gear in the packs.  They were complaining about how heavy their packs were and I swear a few of them ran at least 50 lb.  Heck one guy's sleeping pad was 5 lbs alone.   They were making jokes and as they were pulling out, they said "Hey, take a picture of us, we are your target market".   What a great group of guys they were and full of good humor!  That is why we love to get out there!!

LOL! Sounds like you met a crazy group of guys. I mean, a 5 lb sleeping pad?! goodness… This certainly is your target market!

Oh the wondrous feeling of going lighter. Wish I was there to see it!

Sadly this is more the norm than the exception. Hiking around Grand Teton this summer I watched packs that passed by me guessing their weight. 30 lbs, 35 lbs, 40 lbs, 50 lbs (glup). One person even had a large empty pack strapped to the back of his full 50 lbs pack. He told me it was for day hikes once they set up base camp. People passing us kept asking us if we were on a day hike. “No”, we responding, “we have been going for four days.”
