Going Back to the Third Grade

Grant and Michael periodically go help out Grant’s honey, Jennifer, with her third grade class.  Jennifer is  is an award winning teacher that has a real knack with the kids and she likes to bring in guests to help spice things up.  Grant and Michael always come back with a big smile on their face.  It is a great way to give back.  So if you can’t make it to the backcountry, head over to your nearest elementary school to help out.  The effect will be the same.

You guys rock. I volunteer my Wednesday mornings at my children’s elementary school. I’m fortunate that my employer encourages volunteerism and gives me paid time off each month!

My two kids, Jack (7) and Maggie (5) are we versed in outdoor activities having grown up sharing my love of the outdoors and backpacking, but there are so many young kids that have never ventured outside to even walk a trail yet alone stay out overnight.

I mentor 2nd graders during my Wednesday mornings and also do adhoc presentations on things that I am doing or passionate about. For example I gave a 2nd grade presentation on my recent trip to Mt Whitney letting the kids touch and hold my Gorilla pack, LTE4 trekking poles and SpinnTwinn tarp. It blew their mind and resulted in lots of excited discussions.

It’s a privilege and a pleasure to have time to do this each week and I ALWAYS come away feeling invigorated and refreshed. It’s a great way to start the work day 🙂
