Tripp Clark has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America for the past 40 years, since first joining as a Cub Scout in South Carolina. It is through Scouting, and the friendships that grew out of his Scouting involvement, that most of his backpacking experiences developed. In 2000, Tripp started backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, starting in Georgia. He has progressed steadily northward since as a section hiker, averaging a little over 100 miles each year, and has now completed all of the A.T. south of Tyringham, Massachusetts. As is the case with many section hikers, Tripp’s gear and techniques have evolved a lot over the past 15 years – from a tent to a hammock; from boots to trail runners; from no-cook meals to freezer bag cooking; and from a heavy external frame back, to a large internal frame pack, to a Gossamer Gear Mariposa. As one who enjoys the planning and preparations aspect of each trip, Tripp is an annual contributor to “The A.T. Guide,” by David “Awol” Miller. Tripp enjoys teaching and speaking about backpacking techniques and gear and sharing methods that help make the outdoors more enjoyable for others.

Favorite Training Ground: Southern sections of the Appalachian Trail and Mountains Bridge Wilderness Area, South Carolina.
Current Plans: Continue Appalachian Trail progress with two additional sections up north this summer and fall, completing Massachusetts and progressing into Vermont. This will make the total completed miles over 1650. I have plans to teach multiple classes for local Scouting groups on topics of lightweight backpacking, hammock camping, and freezer bag cooking.
