Steven “Twinkle” and Grace Shattuck hail from Colorado and spend their free time backpacking and peakbagging.
CPA nerd by profession, mountain man at heart, I have two main outdoor passions: Long distance hiking and mountain climbing. In 2013 I climbed 49 of Colorado’s 58 mountains over 14k feet (commonly called 14ers). I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2014 and upon finishing, I flew out east and hiked from Hanover, NH to Springer Mountain in GA. In 2015 I hiked the CDT from Mexico to Montana before bouncing around due to a heavy fire season. In 2016, I pioneered the Beartooth High route (BeHR), and climbed over 50 ranked peaks over 13k feet in Colorado. Currently, I am working at climbing the 200 highest peaks in Colorado, commonly referred to as the bicentennials.
After College, I quickly learned that with a busy corporate job, I needed to minimize my pack weight in order to maximize my free time. Lightening up has allowed for more miles, more summits, more scenery, more laughs, and more opportunities to be in places I otherwise wouldn’t get to enjoy!

Favorite Training Ground
The colorful Colorado Rockies are where I spend my time between major trips. The San Juan Mountains and Sangre de Christo Mountains are my favorite in the state, as they provide the most remote and challenging peaks.
The Kumo Superlight Pack for all backpacking trips, and the Minimalist for all single day excursions to high peaks or remote canyons.
I Never Hit the Trail Without proper clothing layers. In Colorado, weather can fluctuate quickly, and a warm summer day can turn into cold and windy conditions in a flash. I never leave without proper layers to keep me warm, and dry (if there is a chance of rain). My personal favorite piece of layering is the Melanzana Wind Pro 200 Fleece hoodie.
I moved to Colorado in 2013 from North Carolina. Prior to meeting Steven, I hiked the “W Route” in Chilean Patagonia. A passion for adventure and willingness to try new things have led me to try longer and more technical hikes over the past two years with the help and encouragement of my husband Steven. I’ve climbed 22 of CO’s 58 mountains over 14k feet with a goal of summiting the remainder by the end of 2018. Some of the most beautiful hikes I have done are the Alpine Loop around Lake O’Hara in Yoho National Park and the trek to Berg Lake in British Columbia.

Favorite Training Ground: The Colorado Rockies, which are easily accessible from our home in Golden. I’m particularly fond of the Sawatch range outside of Leadville, which is where I climbed my first few 14er’s. The Sawatch mountains have huge rise, and are a good all day workout without being too technical.
Favorite Backpack: For backpacking trips I go for the Gorilla. On day hikes I prefer the Type II.
I Never Hit the Trail Without my La Sportiva Mutants. The Mutants are light for how much support and stability they have, and have incredible grip on rocky sections of trail.
