Heather Knight is an avid outdoors woman, focusing primarily on long distance walking, hiking, and backpacking. This past winter, she added snowshoeing and snow camping to her repertoire (She is a proud snow pulk owner!). She has been dabbling in hammock backpacking, as well. She also hikes and backpacks year-round in the Pacific NW.
In 2010, Heather walked 800 km on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. In 2012, she walked 230 km on the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. Long distance walking via the "camino" is a very different experience from the hiking and backpacking she does at home. However, it served as her inspiration to go lightweight and for that she is very thankful.
In May 2012, she backpacked the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island in British Columbia over 5 nights/6 days walking along the coast, climbing ladders, and camping in coves. It was one of the most amazing experiences of her life.
Lightweight backpacking is a process Heather has been engaging in over the past three years. Her pack weights were running in the 40-45 lbs range for backpack trips. Since then she has slowly reduced weight by purchasing lighter gear, reducing redundancy and learning how to be comfortable with less. Her average pack weight for a week-long backpack runs around 30 lbs now. Shorter trips, even less. As a result of this, her body doesn't hurt as much, she can walk further and enjoy the outdoor experiences more.
Heather looks forward to sharing her journey of lightweight backpacking as she continues to get her kit and gear dialed in, always improving!
