To thrive in the elements is to learn to be more human. Spending quality time in and with the mountains is a lifestyle, a mindset, and a way for me to cultivate deep relationships with nature, good people, and myself. To those ends, I prefer to go light, fast, and minimal. You’ll find me with a light heart and a light pack whether I’m guiding trips, on night hikes, off-trail bushwhacks, or winter trips.
My wife and I named our son Kiyotaka, which in Chinese and Japanese means “clarity one gets from tall mountains” because we wish him to have a nature inspired by nature. I aspire to become a master thru-hiker before I turn 50, and am committed to completing the Great Himalaya Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail (hopefully with my son). I want to pass on my love for the mountains and share my skills with my son, friends, and hikers seasoned or new.
