Brian “Buck 30” Tanzman grew up in Rochester, NY, graduated college from the University of Maryland and worked for 3 years as a CPA having only backpacked 2 nights in his life. Then he read a an article about a guy who hiked something called the “Appalachian Trail”, thought it sounded like fun and 19,000 miles later is completely addicted to thru-hiking. Since reading that fateful article in 2002, Brian has hiked the Appalachian Trail (twice), Pacific Crest Trail (twice), Continental Divide Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, Hayduke Trail, Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, Te Araroa, Bibbulmun Track, Australian Alps Walking Track, Larapinta Track and San Diego Trans County Trail. He’s also branching out from thru-hiking a bit and has cycled across Australia and from Alaska to Montana and has kayaked the Mississippi River.
Brian feels most comfortable in his tent on the trail and leads a lightweight lifestyle not just on the trail, but off the trail as well with everything he owns fitting into a 5’x5’ storage space. When not travelling, Brian works as a CPA for one of the large public accounting firms, spending the winter months working, and the rest of the year off on adventures.
