Tarping Tips

Our newest Trail Ambassador recently lighted his load even further by going with a SpinnTwinn tarp instead of his hammock.  His motivation was partly to lighten up but also to get his lab Coco in on the action.  You see, Coco was feeling left out.  Brian has written a most excellent tarp article on his experience and says:

“The SpinnTwinn provides ample shelter for me, my trusty four-legged trail companion, and all of my gear. In fact, my dog loved the tarp from the moment I set it up, it’s like she instinctively knew she was welcome underneath it.”

wow, to go lighter then a hammock. Will have to read this article. I don’t know if I can lay on the ground again after going to a hammock.

Replaced your hammock with a tarp? Hope not permanently. Might weigh more, but you have more energy in the morning to take on the trail! Also, I wouldn’t want to turn you into the hammockforum authorities. Shug is going to get you! 😉

Yeah I live in fear of the hammock police, especially Shug and his antics. But Gossamer Gear has a good ultralight witness protection program, so I feel somewhat safe.

I still have my hammock of course, but the SpinnTwinn tarp affords me options that I just don’t have with my hammock, like letting my dog sleep underneath and be protected/covered at night. There’s also the significant weight difference. Hennessy Hammock Expedition A-Sym (2lbs, 12oz), GG SpinnTwinn, 2-person tarp (9oz) – nuff said.

I wanted to love sleeping in a hammock, but the truth was I was always cold underneath and didn’t want to have to carry and pack a hammock quilt to go underneath. So I’ll have to lay on the ground again, but I’ll be ready with some better ground protection this time!
